In 2000, the United Nations set Millenium Development Goals to be reached by 2015 on issues such as poverty, gender equality and access to water. According to the U.N. Development Program the targets for access to clean water have been met, but access to sanitation is falling short. Due to these deficiencies, two million people die from water born illnesses every year; many of those are deaths are children in Sub-Saharan Africa. Blouin News’ Vanessa Yurkevich reports on the U.N.’s plans after 2015, and how they hope to solve the global water crisis.
