At six months pregnant, a young woman in El Salvador — who goes by the name of Beatriz to conceal her identity — had a life-saving abortion. However, in a country where abortion is illegal under any circumstance, her case went all the way to El Salvador’s Supreme Court. It ruled against the procedure, but days later the Inter-American Court on Human Rights overturned the verdict, and an emergency C-section was performed in late May. Beatriz’s case represents one of many in Latin America, where abortion is illegal in many countries. The international attention Beatriz’s case garnered shows support for women’s reproductive rights. But as Blouin News’ Vanessa Yurkevich reports, it’s an uphill fight in the region.
