Dow Jones Industrial Average, 2007 peak–date

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above the 15,000 level for the first time on May 7, 2013. Fifteen thousand on the Dow is the sort of big, round number that makes headlines, and seems like a milestone, but doesn’t really mean that much beyond that. For investors who have stayed the course since the peak in October 2007 (or for those who have seen their retirement savings plunge and then gradually rebuild) it means just a 6.33% rise in the index over five-and-a-half years, as the chart above shows. Hard sledding.
